August 2014: BBE’s Dr Steven Bluhm and co-authors have been awarded the AusIMM Best Paper Prize for their paper entitled ‘Life-of-Mine Ventilation and Refrigeration Planning for Resolution Copper Mine’.  The collaborators on the paper included Dr Roy Moreby (Morvent; UNSW), Chris Pascoe (Rio Tinto) and Frank von Glehn (BBE).  The paper was presented at The Australian Mine Ventilation Conference 2013 and published in the conference proceedings.

The Resolution Copper Mine in Arizona, USA, is planned to be a 2000m deep block cave operation with virgin rock temperatures exceeding 80°C.  The paper discusses the proposed ultimate ventilation and cooling system design which includes total primary ventilation flow of approximately 3500m3/s, and both surface and underground refrigeration plants producing more than 140MW refrigeration capacity.

BBE has been involved with the project since 2006 with life-of-mine pre-feasibility work and related pre-engineering and modelling.  BBE’s involvement at Resolution has also included detail engineering and EPCM work for the ventilation and refrigeration systems for the presently ongoing shaft sinking operations.
