Projects : Energy management

The worldwide trend to improved energy-efficient designs, combined with a shortage of generation capacity in South Africa has led to a number of projects in this field.  Funding has also been made available by Eskom (the South African power supply company) through its Demand-Side Management [DSM] programme to provide capital and to stimulate energy-saving initiatives to reduce the likelihood of power outages until additional generating capacity becomes available.  Differential time-of-use tariffs are also sufficient reward for projects that can move energy consumption from high-tariff to low-tariff periods.

Projects undertaken to date include:-

  • adjustable inlet guide-vanes on main fans to reduce air-flow and power consumption during strategic time periods, particularly high-tariff periods [energy-saving]
  • ice-thermal storage systems where refrigeration machines are converted to produce ice during off-peak periods which can then be melted during peak-tariff periods allowing the machines to be turned off [energy shifting]
  • bladder-type thermal storage systems where existing dams are converted to contain warm and cold water simultaneously in differing ratios, such that machines can be stopped during peak periods and cold water be drawn from the same dam that warm water is being returned to.

The increase in activity in this sphere led to the creation in 2009 of BBEnergy [hyperlink] which now has its own section on our web-site.
